There was once a time when people didn't know the price of things. They went shopping and hoped for the best. Who knew how much that 22-volume set of World Book Encyclopedias cost?

But that all changed when The Price is Right first aired on September 4, 1972. When contestants were called to bid on fur coats and trips to Acapulco, they weren't just expected to walk up to the stage at their own leisure. No! Announcer Johnny Olsen commanded them, "Come on down!"

And come down they did… and they've kept it coming for over forty years.
