Does your dog bite?

Context

This line is spoken by Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau (played by Peter Sellers) in the film The Pink Panther Strikes Again, directed by Blake Edwards (1976).

The Pink Panther isn't a sneaky cartoon character in these live-action movies. Instead, it's a diamond. But even though this movie is called The Pink Panther Strikes Again, it has nothing to do with the diamond or the cartoon. It involves the further slapstick adventures of the inept Inspector Clouseau, who has an assortment of assassins after him.

Attempting to avoid assassination, Inspector Clouseau checks into a hotel. On his way to his room, he sees a small shaggy dog sitting on the ground. "Does your dog bite?," Clouseau asks the man at the desk. The man says no, so Clouseau stoops to pet the dog, who immediately chomps down on his glove.

"I thought you said you dog did not bite," Clouseau says. "That is not my dog," says the innkeeper. Fair enough.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if you've ever come across someone checking to see if a seemingly harmless animal might actually treat him or her like a chew toy.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

As long as you're not using that horrible French accent, this quote is fairly far from pretentious.
