Source: Gone with the Wind

Speaker: Rhett Butler

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Context

This famous line was spoken by Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable, in the movie Gone with the Wind, directed by Victor Fleming (1939).

Rhett Butler is fed up with Scarlett O'Hara (even if she is resourceful at making her own clothing) at the end of Gone with the Wind. When she pleads, "Where shall I go? What shall I do?" Rhett tells her, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn," and leaves her behind forever.

Ouch.

P.S. The line is originally from the book, but it was a little different—and not quite as catchy—in that version.

Where you've heard it

You were probably born knowing the most famous movie quote of all time. And you say it whenever you're just fed up with someone, no matter what era you live in.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

In Gone with the Wind, Scarlett is the pretentious one. Dismissing Scarlett is like dismissing pretension itself.
