Speaker: Eddie Haskell

"Gee, Mrs. Cleaver..."

Eddie Haskell: Hey Wally, nobody's home. Let's call up some girls and pretend we're talent scouts.

June Cleaver: [Enters the room.] Hello, Eddie.

Eddie Haskell: Oh. Hi, Mrs. Cleaver. Gee Mrs. Cleaver, your hair looks real pretty today.

June Cleaver: Well, you should know Eddie, being a talent scout.

Context

This line is spoken by Eddie Haskell, played by Ken Osmond, in the TV show Leave It to Beaver (1957-1963).

Ed Haskell was Wally Cleaver's smart-mouthed, sneaky best friend. But he was also smart enough to hide his bad intentions by sucking up and pretending to be the perfect gentleman whenever he was around his friends' parents.

He liked to lay it on real thick with Mrs. Cleaver, telling her some variation on a compliment starting with, "Gee, Mrs. Cleaver…." But June Cleaver was no fool and she almost always saw through Eddie's pathetic attempts at flattery. Better luck next time, kid.

Where you've heard it

Even to this day, referring to someone as an Eddie Haskell means they're a rotten person who just puts on an innocent act to hide their dirty deeds. Don't be an Eddie Haskell, kids.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If you try to drop a "Gee, Mrs. Cleaver"-type compliment on someone they won't find you pretentious, but they probably will think you're a teacher's pet.
