Author: The Psalmist

"He heals the brokenhearted."

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Context

This line is written by the Psalmist in Psalm 147:3.

Here the Psalmist is praising God and talking about all the good things he does. Little does the Psalmist know that they've just inadvertently coined a term that will be sung billions upon billions of times by rock gods, pop idols, and teenage girls.

Where you've heard it

Bet you didn't know the whole "broken heart" thing came from the Bible, did you?

You hear it in everything from love songs to political speeches to everyday speech. Its meaning has probably changed just a little bit from what the Psalmist was talking about…

There are about a zillion songs, books, movies and TV shows that have used this phrase, but we'll shout out to just a few: "Achy Breaky Heart," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart," "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," and of course anything by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

So is a broken heart a real thing? Absolutely. It's totally possible to die of a broken heart, according to doctors. In fact, broken heart syndrome has a real name: stress-induced cardiomyopathy. Take good care of your ticker, folks.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's kinda the opposite of pretentious, we'd say. And it's so common, you probably don't even realize you're using a quote at all.
