"He who marches out of step hears another drum."
And the third boy mutters, "Of course, the very nature of this plan could indicate that [McMurphy] is simply a shrewd con man, and not mentally ill at all."
He glances around to see how this strikes [Nurse Ratched] and sees she still hasn't moved or given any sign. But the rest of the staff sits there glaring at him like he's said some awful vulgar thing. He sees how he's stepped way out of bounds and tries to bring it off as a joke by giggling and adding, "You know, like 'He Who Marches Out Of Step Hears Another Drum'"—but it's too late. The first resident turns on him after setting down his cup of coffee and reaching in his pocket for a pipe big as your fist. "Frankly, Alvin," he says to the third boy, "I'm disappointed in you. Even if one hadn't read his history all one should need to do is pay attention to his behavior on the ward to realize how absurd the suggestion is. This man is not only very, very sick, but I believe he is definitely a Potential Assaultive. I think that is what Miss Ratched was suspecting when she called this meeting. Don't you recognize the arch type of psychopath? I've never heard of a clearer case. This man is a Napoleon, a Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun."
Context
This line comes from the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey (1962).
Staff members at the mental hospital where Randle McMurphy is a patient are debating exactly what to do with him. What's up with this guy? Is he a psychopath? Or is he just a garden-variety weirdo? At least one of the orderlies is willing to bet he's just a dude who marches to the beat of his own drum. Is that so bad? He just hears a different tune than the rest of us, right? Why not let him be eccentric and just be done with it?
Nope. There is no room for dissension in Nurse Ratched's asylum. In her eyes, McMurphy is a dangerous man. A maniac on par with Genghis Khan. McMurphy must be stopped and order must be restored. No one marches to the step of their own drum on Nurse Ratched's watch.
Yeah, we wouldn't want to be her patient, either.
Where you've heard it
Even though Alvin gets shot down pretty quickly for suggesting it, the idea of marching to the beat of your own drum is generally a positive idea, right? You might actually hear people quoting this line to praise a person who's different rather than tear them down.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Toot your flute. Bang your drum. Shake your groove thang. Nothing pretentious about that. Just don't do it on Nurse Ratched's time.
