Source: Funny Girl

Speaker: Fanny Brice

Hello, gorgeous.

Context

This line is spoken by Fanny Brice (played by Barbara Streisand) in the movie Funny Girl, directed by William Wyler (1968).

These lines are the first spoken by Streisand in this classic movie musical about Vaudeville star Fanny Brice and her rocky relationship with smooth gambler Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif). Fanny actually says this to herself after entering a Broadway theater and looking at herself in the mirror. It may sound conceited, but—trust us—it's not.

What's that? You don't trust us? We're deeply hurt, Shmoopers. Click here for the proof.

Where you've heard it

Well, if you happened to be watching the 1969 Academy Awards, you heard Streisand say the line when accepting the award for Best Actress (which she tied for with Katherine Hepburn. Yes they occasionally have ties at the Oscars). If you were just a glimmer in your parents' eyes back then, it's more likely that you've heard it as the name of a hair salon, hair extensions brand, or hair ball (okay, so that last one doesn't exist). Also, if you've ever watched RuPaul's Drag Race, you've noticed he calls his contestants "funny girls."

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Babs? Pretentious?? We think not, Shmoopers.
