Source: The Lion in Winter

Speaker: Prince Geoffrey

If you're a prince, there's hope for every ape in Africa.

Context

This famous line is spoken by Prince Geoffrey (John Castle) to Prince John (Nigel Terry) in The Lion in Winter (directed by Anthony Harvey, 1968).

It's a family reunion of medieval proportions when the offspring of Henry II get together to scheme for their father's throne in The Lion in Winter, a film which is basically two hours of royalty slinging sarcasm at each other.

This line, from Prince Geoffrey to his brother Prince John, who is clumsily trying to kill him, is one of the most biting. Brotherly love of this caliber wouldn't be seen for another 800 years or so (until Joey Lawrence starred with his real-life brothers on 90s train wreck Brotherly Love).

Where you've heard it

This film is famous for its snappy dialogue. Who knew the 12th century could be so sassy?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We hesitate to say anything negative about this family for fear of what they'd do to us.
