Source: Bohemian Rhapsody

Speaker: Queen

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

Context

This line is from the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen from the album A Night at the Opera (1975).

With the two lines, "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" the band Queen immediately sends us into a trance, completely unprepared for the next six minutes of pure music heaven. We would quote the whole song, but we don't have that much room…and we still don't know what some of the words even mean.

Scaramouch?

Where you've heard it

If the first lines don't immediately ring a bell, some of the song's other lines might. Take your pick: "I see a little silhouetto of a man, scaramouch, scaramouch, will you do the fandango?" or "I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me" or even "Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here."

Also, everyone ever has covered it.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Pro tip: it's almost impossible to do this song justice at karaoke.
