"There was no room for them in the inn."

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Context

This line is written by Luke in Luke 2:7.

Mary (as in "the Virgin Mary") giving birth to Jesus (as in "wonderful, counselor, the mighty god, the everlasting father, the prince of peace," etc.) is what you'd call the Christmas story—maybe the most famous part of the entire New Testament. The "no room in the inn" bit refers to the fact that Bethlehem was packed with Jews paying taxes to the Romans. Because Joseph (Mary's husband) couldn't find them a decent hotel room, Jesus was laid in a manger (basically a food trough) instead of a crib.

Where you've heard it

When there's no room for just about anything, people might use this quote. Moving van's full? No room in the inn! Elevator's packed? No room in the inn! Can't force down another slice of pizza? No room in the inn!

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Close to a zero, especially if you're an overbooked hotelier.
