Speaker: The Phantom

"Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind."

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night.

Context

This line is from the song "Music of the Night" by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart from the musical The Phantom of the Opera (1986).

"Music of the Night” might seem like a love song, but it's a lot more complicated than that. This little tune pops up once the Phantom lures Christine, a beautiful, young opera singer, down into his lair underneath the Paris Opera House. Here, he pours his heart out to her and mesmerizes her with his amazing vocal powers and songwriting prowess. Hey, the ladies love good diction.

The Phantom reveals himself to be a tragically disfigured genius who wants Christine to leave her everyday life and live down below the opera house with him, so he can write her songs forever. It's pretty creepy, but it's also kind of sad. You can imagine that this guy hasn't had a lot of friends, given that he's scary to look at, and also tends to kill people he doesn't like.

It's easy to forget that the Phantom is creepy when he sings this beautiful, romantic song. It's so intense and emotional, you start to understand his point of view. This is the music of the night, not some silly love song.

However, dating this guy is not gonna be sunny, mostly because he lives in a dank underground tunnel. Hey, we've been on worse dates.

Where you've heard it

This is one of the more famous songs from The Phantom of the Opera. Heck, it's one of the more famous songs in the history of musical theater, so you've probably hear someone like Barbra Streisand belting it out at some point.

Also, in a surprising move, David Cook did a faithful cover on American Idol, going on to win the season. You can't go wrong with a little Phantom.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You might look a little arrogant if you break this one out, mostly because people might assume you're a mad genius composer.
