"Perhaps there aren’t any grownups anywhere."

"Where's the man with the megaphone?"

The fair boy shook his head.

"This is an island. At least I think it's an island. That's a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there aren't any grownups anywhere."

Context

Gulp. Nine paragraphs into the story, and the boys already understand that the ruling order of society that they're used to has disappeared.

Where you've heard it

"Perhaps there aren't any grownups anywhere" sounds like something that might be spoken at the beginning of an ABC Family movie in which the kids are about to have the run of the house. Think of the no-grownups excitement at the beginning of all these movies:

  • Home Alone
  • Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead
  • Blank Check
  • Big

Of course, in the end, the excitement dies down, and the kids all start killing each other.

Oh, that's just Lord of the Flies? Our bad.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not wanting grown-ups around is just human.
