Context

This line is from the song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" by Beyoncé from the album I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008).

While dancing in a sexy leotard and moving her wrist—and pretty much every other part of her body—in ways you didn't think were humanly possible, Beyoncé speaks for all the single ladies...even though she had secretly married Jay-Z by this point. 

She tells them what to do if their man doesn't appreciate them: walk out, and tell him, "If you like it then you shoulda put ring on it." Translation: "you should have married me when you had the chance."

Yep, Sasha is Fierce.

Where you've heard it

You said it yourself when you did your own "Single Ladies" dance back in 2008, and you heard Beyoncé use the phrase when she campaigned for marriage equality in 2013.

It's also become a lazy go-to headline for pretty much every celebrity engagement article ever.
