Speaker: Will Hunting

"I had to go see about a girl."

I had to go see about a girl.

Context

This famous line is a voice-over spoken by Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting (directed by Gus Van Sant, 1997).

Midway through the film, Sean—Will's court ordered psychologist—is telling his patient about how he met his wife…and how he turned down a chance to see one of the greatest moments in baseball history just on the off-chance that she was the one.

"Sorry guys, I gotta see about a girl," he tells his friends who wind up going to the game. He must have had some understanding buddies. Our friends would have stuffed us into a Hefty bag, thrown us into the trunk of their Camry, and driven us to the stadium against our will.

But the line only became famous because of the callback near the very end of the film, when Sean gets a hand-written note from Will explaining why he won't be showing up to that new job he got: "I had to go see about a girl." To which Sean responds, "Son of a b----, he stole my line."

As far as we know, no plagiarism lawsuit ensued.

Where you've heard it

We're not gonna lie: we love to use this quote in every situation possible. We'd tell you more about it, but we have to go see about a pretentious factor.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

No way. Nothing said in a Boston accent can be pretentious.
