"And she shaved his head, and his strength went from him."
[H]e told her all his heart, and said unto her [...] if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. [...] And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she [...] shave[d ...] his head; [...] and his strength went from him.
Context
This line is written by the author of Judges in Judges 16:17, 19.
Delilah's been begging Samson for a while to tell her how he gets his strength so she can betray him and get paid some sweet, sweet moo-lah. He finally gives up and tells her, and the next thing he knows he's a weakling with a flat-top.
Where you've heard it
When someone loses the source of their power and becomes weak, this quote may pop up. "Without my cup 'o joe in the morning I'm like Samson in the lap of Delilah!"
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It's just obscure enough that it's usually safe to use. Just be careful who you call a Delilah.
