For Mowgli, that friend is Baloo, who teaches him that the bare necessities he needs to survive are easy to access (especially if you're a bear and have claws for those prickly paw-paws) if you just keep your eyes peeled and quit worrying. Given that Baloo's a bear, the song is also a pun, making it all the more memorable.
