The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
Context
This line is from the novel Diggers, written by Terry Pratchett (1990).
Terry Pratchett's The Bromeliad Trilogy is all about a group of tiny creatures living on Earth called nomes, who are trying to return to their home planet with help from a little sentient computer named The Thing. Cool, right? One of our favorite quotes from this series is all about the trouble with having an open mind.
Of course, we always think having an open mind is a good thing, but there's a flip side to it too. If you're not careful, anyone can come along and start filling your brain up with all kinds of crazy ideas. Because if you're open to all ideas, you might not be filtering out the bad ones. So, yeah, it's important to keep an open mind, but don't forget to shovel out some of the sludge every now and then, too.
Where you've heard it
A mind is a terrible thing to waste—so is an open mind. You'll probably hear this quote trotted out anywhere open minds (and the glories of Terry Pratchett) are being praised.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Hey, if it's good enough for nomes, then it can't be pretentious, right?
