"When you wish upon a star."

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

Context

This line is from the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington from the movie Pinocchio (1940).

This über recognizable Disney song plays over the opening credits of Pinocchio and ties in with the themes of the movie quite nicely. When the kind toy maker, Geppetto, wishes on a star that his little wooden puppet would turn into a real boy—he does! Yay for wishing on stars!

Of course, Pinocchio also gets in a whole lot of trouble after trading in his marionette strings, but what do you expect? Wishing stars can't solve all the world's problems, can they?

Where you've heard it

This is the perfect quote for dreamers everywhere. And it's kind of Disney's calling card too.

Additional Notable References:

  • "When You Wish Upon a Star" was the first Disney to song to ever win an Oscar. Kudos to Walt!
  • The opening notes of the tune play at the beginning of nearly every Disney movie.
  • A later Disney movie, The Princess and the Frog, seemed to call out the main idea of this song when Tiana convinced herself that wishing on stars was useless—the only way to get what you want is hard work. Preach, girl.
  • Family Guy also had an episode called "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein." Oh, those rascals.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Oh, dreams and wishes aren't pretentious at all. You just keep on wishing on those stars, little dreamer!
