Wii (We) would like to play.

Context

This line was spoken in the 2006 Wii video game commercial developed by Leo Burnett.

In 2006, Nintendo took the video game world by storm with the release of the Nintendo Wii console. This game system was revolutionary because it used a special motion controller to simulate a punch, baseball hit, tennis swing, or even a sword slash. It was also responsible for quite a few TV screens getting shattered into a million pieces after particularly boisterous games of Madden NFL or Wii Tennis.

In the charming "Wii (We) would like to play" ad, two traveling Japanese salesman show the mass appeal of the new game system as they journey from family homes in the suburbs to high-rise apartments, and even a farm where one of the residents hugs them a little too hard after experiencing the epic fun of Rayman Raving Rabbids. (Think Mario, but with psycho white bunnies and a cereal mascot main character.) Then, they finish their tour at the local high school assembly to appeal to the all-important teen demographic before driving off into the sunset in their impossibly adorable car.

This ad shows the near-universal appeal of the Wii and its games. Whether you've played every Metroid or Legend of Zelda game or have never lifted a control in your existence, this ad sure makes it look like fun.

Where you've heard it

If you were alive and conscious in 2006 or 2007, this ad probably piqued your interest, and a Wii was the only thing you wanted for Christmas. It looked at least 100 times better than your GameCube or your older sibling's PlayStation 2. You might have even camped outside your friendly neighborhood video game store to make sure you could have hours of fun playing fake tennis or saving Hyrule.

Additional Notable References:

  • "Wii would like to play" got noticed by its advertising peers for Most Effective Marketing Effort at the 2008 Effie Awards. Even ad execs in smart suits want to play.
  • Even after the Wii's launch, "Wii would like to play" got a nice workout advertising individual games like Super Paper Mario.
  • If you're a real Nintendo aficionado, there are some pretty fun Easter Eggs in the first "Wii would like to play" ad, including a Triforce and even one of those pesky Bullet Bills you keep running into from the Mario games.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote is all about having video game fun with friends and family and doesn't have a pretentious bone in its body. Unless someone starts debating which Zelda game is the best, and then things could get ugly.
