Real diamonds! They must be worth their weight in gold!
Context
This line is spoken by Sugar Kane Kowalczyk in the film Some Like it Hot (1959).
It's getting sultry in here, Shmoopers. Sugar Kane Kowalczyk (played by Marilyn Monroe) says this over the phone to her love interest Joe (Tony Curtis), who's trying to scam her. He wants her to think that he's leaving and that this diamond bracelet is a going-away present. The idea is that he's on the run from the mob and doesn't want to leave her behind—so he leaves a token of his love.
"Worth its weight in gold" just means of high value, but Sugar's portrayed as such a ditz that the only way she can describe something of value is with… something else of value. Some would call her a gold-digger, but don't go too rough on her. She has a dramatic change of heart in the end.
Where you've heard it
Marilyn's known more for her "diamonds are a girl's best friend" quip, so this one is reserved for the history buffs. If you're a 1950s movie nerd, you should have this one in your back pocket already. Oh, and if you're interested in investing in precious stones and metals, this would hold particular relevance, too.

Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It's impossible to be pretentious when quoting this ditzy remark. Try it out in a falsetto for that iconic Marilyn effect.
