Speaker: The Beatles
"Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away."
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Context
This line is from the song "Yesterday" by The Beatles from the album Help! (1965).
When you've just had your heart broken, it's not unusual to look back on happier times and romanticize them. That's exactly what Paul McCartney is doing in this song. He opens by remembering what his life was like only yesterday. It's obvious his lady just left him (probably sometime today). Now, all he can think about is how he wasn't feeling so awful 24 hours ago. We know that feeling, bro. We know that feeling.
Where you've heard it
Sometimes things are just better in the past, but we can't help thinking it's a little sad anytime you hear people dreaming of the good times that happened yesterday.
In a Beatles-inspired episode of The Powerpuff Girls, the Professor tells the girls that "yesterday, all our troubles seemed so far away."
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
If you drop this quote at your next party, everyone will probably just feel bad for you, not think you're pretentious at all. So go ahead and feel those feelings.
