Context

This line is part of the chorus of "Beautiful" from Christina Aguilera's album Stripped (2002).

Christina Aguilera was a genie in a bottle in 1999, but someone must have rubbed her the wrong way, because by the time she released her 2002 album Stripped, she did a complete 180, coming out as a "Dirrty" "Fighter" who changed her name to Xtina to show that you better not cross her.

But she still had somewhat of a softer side, which she revealed in "Beautiful." The song basically says that sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you.

Where you've heard it

"Beautiful" is the supreme anti-bullying anthem. VH1 honored it as such on Spirit Day in 2012. Also, Damien sang it in the Mean Girls talent show. Don't look at him.

P.S. This song is not to be confused with "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, a song that makes people—even the singer himself—want to jump off a cliff.
