Shakespeare Words
Shakespearean, not stirred.
If Shakespeare wrote it, we've Shmooped it.
Amazement
Invented in King John“ | All Kent hath yielded; nothing there holds out
But Dover castle: London hath received,
Like a kind host, the Dauphin and his powers:
Your nobles will not hear you, but are gone
To offer service to your enemy,
And wild amazement hurries up and down | ” |
Sometimes we wonder how people understood Shakespeare when he was creating new words all the time, but it's actually pretty easy to see with this one. The word amaze was already floating around town; Shakespeare simply added on a nifty little -ment to the end of it to make it a noun. We guess when you're a master of language, you know a thing or two about suffixes. |
