Abbot Dom Paulo Timeline and Summary

  • Dom Paulo receives a warning that Thon Taddeo is Hannegan's man through and through. Meaning that he's basically a hand of the government, and that's no good.
  • He then goes to kick the Poet out of the guest quarters. Partly to make room for Thon Taddeo's arrival, but mostly for the pleasure of kicking out the Poet.
  • Next, he settles a dispute between Brother Kornhoer and Brother Armbruster over the arc lamp being set up in the library. It's where the crucifix hangs, so the whole situation is kind of symbolic of the ongoing tensions between science and religion.
  • With a goat in tow, he visits Benjamin, the old Jewish hermit, at his mountain home. The two wonder whether or not Thon Taddeo will help usher mankind into a new era, or if they'll all be stuck in a cycle of repeating past mistakes.
  • Taddeo arrives. Dom Paulo and him observe Brother Kornhoer's arc lamp experiment and are flabbergasted. Wow, light.
  • Dom Paulo learns Taddeo's soldier guards are making sketches of the abbey's fortifications, but doesn't know how to broach the subject with the thon.
  • He invites Taddeo to discuss his work with the monks after a dinner.
  • During the dinner, the Poet lets slip the soldier's sketches. Dom Paulo tells Taddeo what's happening.
  • Brother Claret arrives, and Dom Paulo learns that Hannegan has, more-or-less, declared war on the Church.
  • Dom Paulo asks Taddeo whether he will serve Hannegan or God. God is not on Taddeo's list of options, even though he's not super fond of Hannegan himself.
  • Taddeo discovers an allusion in the Memorabilia that suggests man was created by a more intelligent race. Dom Paulo points out the reference is to a pre-Deluge play, and returns the crucifix to its place in the library.
  • Taddeo returns the sketches to Dom Paulo. The two shake as an act of respect and truce but not friendship.
