• Before the story opens, Dani is born to a single mom who also happens to be a drug addict. Not good. She lives in California near her cousin, Amy, until Amy's mom dies and Amy moves to Raynesville with Grammie. Dani is forced to live with a guy named Cody who quickly becomes obsessed with her, and one night, Cody's dad attacks Dani and leaves a lovely scar on her face. Dani and her mom are on the run from Cody and his dad when they hear that Amy committed suicide and then Grammie died soon after.
• As the story opens, Dani and her mom move into Grammie's old house in Raynesville.
• Dani's determined to find out why Amy would commit suicide, so she starts reading her cousin's diary for clues.
• Dani starts high school and quickly catches Jake's eye. He catches hers, too, even though she really wants to hate him.
• Dani also tries out for the swim team and blows the competition out of the water.
• Dani's having a hard time figuring out why Amy committed suicide—and a pretty tough time blaming Jake West for it, too.
• She's invited to hang out on the Bus and she jumps off Lucifer's Ledge on an impulse. Jake dives in to save her, though Dani totally doesn't need saving.
• Jake also shows Dani Amy's secret painting place.
• Later that night she's attacked by a mystery man while playing the Game.
• Dani talks to Mr. Dermott about Amy, but he doesn't have much to say.
• At the first swim meet, Dani pretty much kicks butt.
• At a bonfire, crazy Cody shows up, attacks Dani, and stabs Jake in the process.
• Finally Dani and Jake kiss.
• That night, someone breaks into her house and steals Amy's diary.
• Turns out it was Mr. Dermott. The next day he confesses to Jake that he and Amy had an affair and he was there when she died.
• Dani helps Jake as Mr. Dermott attacks him.
• The police tell Dani she was right all along—Amy's death was accidental.
• Dani and Jake get together and live happily ever after. Yay.
