• Count Olaf agrees to adopt the three Baudelaire orphans so that he can get his hands on their enormous fortune.
• Every day, he leaves a long list of difficult chores for the children to perform.
• One day, he demands that the children make dinner for his theater troupe, but he's furious when he comes home to see that the brats haven't made roast beef.
• Before sending the children to bed, Count Olaf smacks Klaus across the face.
• The next day, Count Olaf receives a call from Mr. Poe—it seems the Baudelaires have gone to see him, and they're not adjusting to life with Count Olaf as their dad.
• Count Olaf tells them that they will perform in his upcoming play, The Marvelous Marriage, or else.
• The next morning, Klaus confronts Count Olaf. The kid knows exactly what the villain is up to.
• While Klaus is talking, Count Olaf has one of his henchmen kidnap Sunny and imprison her in a birdcage hanging from the top of a tower.
• Count Olaf tells Violet and Klaus that if they don't go through with his play the next night, he will have Sunny dropped to her death.
• That night, Count Olaf gets word from his associate that Violet was trying to rescue her sister from the tower, so he orders her and Klaus imprisoned in the tower room until show time.
• Count Olaf performs during the play, but once Violet signs the marriage document in the third act, he stops the show to reveal his villainous plan has worked.
• When Count Olaf finds out that his schemes have been foiled, he escapes in darkness, but not before vowing to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune if it's the last thing he does.
