• Klaus is playing at Briny Beach when Mr. Poe tells him that his parents have died in a terrible fire. Well that's some bad news.
• He stays with Mr. Poe for a short time before going to live with the villainous Count Olaf.
• One day, Count Olaf leaves a note instructing the children to make dinner for his theater troupe.
• Klaus and his siblings find a recipe in a cookbook and prepare pasta puttanesca, which Count Olaf does not appreciate at all. Such a hater.
• That night, Count Olaf smacks Klaus for daring to question him.
• The next day, Klaus and his siblings go to visit Mr. Poe to tell them their troubles with Count Olaf, but their complaints fall on deaf ears.
• The next morning, Count Olaf informs Klaus that he and his siblings will take part in his upcoming play, The Marvelous Marriage.
• That night, Klaus stays up all night reading a law book to try to find out what Count Olaf is up to.
• The next morning, Klaus reveals to Count Olaf that he knows the full details of his villainous scheme.
• But, while Klaus is talking, Count Olaf has one of his henchmen kidnap Sunny and imprison her in a birdcage at the top of a tower, leaving Klaus no choice but to go along with Count Olaf's scheme.
• The next night, Klaus watches as his sister, Violet, signs marriage documents on stage in front of everyone. Dun dun dun…
• Once Violet reveals that she signed with the wrong hand and the marriage is invalid, Count Olaf manages to escape.
• In the end, Klaus and his siblings ride off with Mr. Poe in search of a new guardian.
