Uhmma Timeline and Summary

  • Our first intro into Uhmma isn't exactly pleasant nor is it direct, but it is telling.
  • While in Korea, we find out that Uhmma and Apa fight over the Apa's late drunken nights.
  • But then Uhmma introduces the idea of going to America or "Mi Gook," and everything seems golden.
  • To prepare Young Ju for their trip to America, Uhmma makes Young Ju get a perm because Uhmma thinks that's how pretty American girls do their hair.
  • Once they get to Mi Gook, things get tough for Uhmma.
  • First of all, she's forced to move out of Gomo's house, not by Gomo, but by Apa, who has issues about living in his sister's house.
  • Where do they move to? The ghetto. Enough said.
  • Then Uhmma gets pregnant, which is great news on one hand, but on the other hand just adds extra pressure on everyone, including Uhmma, who ends up getting a low-end job at a restaurant to help pay the bills after she gives birth to Joon Ho.
  • In fact, she's so busy that she misses Young Ju's awards ceremony. She even apologizes to Young Ju for being, in Uhmma's eyes, a bad parent, too busy to take part in her daughter's achievements.
  • Oh and by the way, throughout her time with Apa in Mi Gook, Uhmma has to deal with an increasing level of verbal, psychological, and physical abuse from him.
  • The final straw? Apa hits Young Ju, which makes Uhmma step in and try to put an end to it.
  • But she only manages to turn his violence on to her, so much so that she ends up beaten so badly that the only way to save her is for Young Ju to call 9-1-1.
  • When the police come, Uhmma doesn't press charges against Apa.
  • She even goes to pick him up from spending a night in jail, but she finds out that he has a girlfriend on the side when he gets in a car with his girlfriend instead.
  • Uhmma's so mad that she takes it out on Young Ju and blames Young Ju for driving Apa away.
  • Eventually she gets over her anger, apologizes to Young Ju, and refuses to go back to Apa once she hears that he's returning to Korea.
  • Instead she and her kids finally move out to their own house, and she finds some measure of peace. She even takes some time out and walks along the beach, reflecting on her hands as evidence of her hard life.
