The Hunter Timeline and Summary

The hunter encounters Phoenix in a ditch, where she lies after the black dog has knocked her over.
Phoenix reaches her hand to him, and he lifts her up, asking if anything is broken.
The hunter then asks where she lives and where she is going. When she explains that she is going to town, the hunter is surprised by how far she is traveling, but he figures she wants to see Santa Claus because it is Christmas.
A nickel falls out of the hunter's pocket (we think). He does not notice, but Phoenix does.
Phoenix turns her attention back to the black dog. She whispers for it to sic the hunter, but he does not hear her. Instead he sets his own dog after the black dog, throws sticks at it, and even shoots his gun at it.
While the hunter and his dog are chasing after the black dog, Phoenix scoops the nickel from the ground.
The hunter returns and points the gun at Phoenix and asks if she is afraid. She is not.
He lowers the gun and tells her he would give her some money if he had any, and advises her to go home and stay home so that nothing will happen to her.
Phoenix says she is determined to go her way, and they each walk off in their own directions.
