Dan is Randy's best bro and Fort Repose's only doctor after The Day, which is to say that he's also its most important citizen. Luckily, he's a pretty swell guy too. Plus, given that he hooks up with Helen at the end of the novel, he and Randy can finally call each other "brother" and mean it literally. Nice bonus.
