What’s Up With the Ending?

"Some days are like that"?

Seriously?!

Isn't Mom supposed to make everything good? To say it'll be okay? To kiss it and make it better? That's what she's there for, right?

Viorst (and a whole bunch of developmental psychologists) actually say…no.

The book leaves Alexander, and you—the reader—without a resolution. No happy ending, no tomorrow-will-be-better...not even an it-could-be-worse.
Nothing.

But that's the point. Viorst wants the readers—children and adults—to realize that, hey, everyone has bad days. That's just life.

And there's nothing wrong with that.
