• Equality 7-2521 sees Liberty 5-3000 one day while sweeping near the fields where she works. He notes that she is attractive and develops a crush on her. Equality 7-251 overhears her name from one of her fellow workers.
• Equality 7-2521 starts to look at Liberty 5-3000 every day as he passes. Eventually, she starts looking back at him, and smiling.
• One day, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 speak to each other and decide they do not want to be like each other's siblings. Liberty 5-3000 also reveals she's seventeen.
• Many days pass until Liberty 5-3000 and Equality 7-2521 can speak again. This time, they reveal that they've each given each other new names in their heads: Equality 7-2521 has named Liberty 5-3000 the Golden One, and she has named him the Unconquered.
• Liberty 5-3000 gives Equality 7-2521 water to drink from her hands, and they're both bowled over by how sensual the whole experience is.
• More time passes, and Liberty 5-3000 doesn't see Equality 7-2521, since he's been put in prison.
• Liberty 5-3000 follows Equality 7-2521 into the Uncharted Forest as soon as she learns of his escape, and finds him. They have their first kiss, and then later that night discover "the one ecstasy granted to the race of men" (9.24).
• Liberty 5-3000 and Equality 7-2521 find a house from the Unmentionable Times in the Uncharted Forest. Liberty 5-3000 accepts Equality 7-2521's decision to spend the rest of their lives there. She then spends the whole day in front of a mirror looking at herself.
• Liberty 5-3000 learns the word "I" from Equality 7-2521, and also receives a new name from him: Gaea. We learn from Equality 7-2521 at the end of the novella that Liberty 5-3000 is pregnant with his son.
