Rise and C.J.

Jesse spends a lot of time hanging out with Rise and C.J. one on one. When he hangs out with Rise, he usually feels annoyed or horrified, but when he's with C.J., he has a good time. After awhile, he begins to pick up on this difference: "On the way home I was thinking about C.J. and how easy it was to hang out with him. […] That used to be the way it was with me and Rise" (3.23-3.24). The key words here are "used to be"—Jesse and Rise really don't have much in common anymore. C.J., on the other hand, is a fellow artist and he and Jesse support each other in their artistic pursuits.
