• When Anney is fifteen she has Bone by some guy whom we never meet.
• Over the next few years she tries to have Bone's birth certificate changed so that it doesn't mark her as illegitimate, but each time is met with judgmental looks. She hates how Bone's illegitimacy marks her as trash, and works really hard to counter that label.
• Anney meets and marries pretty-boy Lyle Parsons and has Reese when she is nineteen. Lyle dies in a car accident not long after Reese is born.
• Anney, now back working at a diner, is introduced to Glen Waddell. They date for two years while Anney feels out the situation and then are married.
• Anney is immediately pregnant but has a stillborn boy. She is unable to have children afterwards, and this makes Glen even more enraged than he was before.
• Anney has to work harder and harder as the family can't afford the places they live in and as Glen loses job after job.
• Once, when there is no food for the girls, Anney goes out all dressed up in heels and a tight sweater and comes back with a fully-stocked cupboard. We can only guess how she got it.
• When Anney catches Bone stealing from Woolworth's, she is ashamed that Bone would debase herself that way and makes her go over and apologize.
• Whenever Glen beats Bone, Anney listens to his excuses and seems to blame Bone (though not with much conviction). But, when she is confronted by a doctor about Bone's home life, Anney leaves Glen—only to get back with him two weeks later under the delusion that things will change.
• Anney sends Bone to go stay with Ruth for the summer, and then with Raylene, and then with Alma. Basically her way of solving the problem is to keep her away from Glen.
• After Ruth dies and the family finds out about Glen beating Bone, Anney moves her and the girls to an apartment over the fish market. She seems angry at Bone and doesn't speak.
• When Alma goes crazy Anney is the one to comfort her. She finally talks to Bone about Glen, and says that she won't make Bone go back to live with him. She also says that she can't stand the idea of Bone hating her.
• Anney walks in on Glen raping Bone at Alma's, and screams and throws things at him. But once they're at the car and Glen starts asking Anney to kill him, she starts to cry and holds him against her.
• Anney disappears for a while after the incident until one day she shows up at Raylene's to give Bone a new birth certificate without the "Illegitimate" stamp. She tells Bone how much she loves her and then leaves for good.
