Turtle Timeline and Summary

  • "Turtle" is born in a Plymouth—or so her aunt tells Taylor (1.97).
  • At some point during her first two and a half years of life, her mother dies, and she enters the care of her aunt. Things are still pretty sketchy about this period though.
  • During these same years, somebody abuses her violently. We have no way of knowing who her abuser is, whether the abuse began before or after her mother died, and how long it has been going on. But we know it's freaky.
  • One night, her aunt abandons her to a stranger—a young white woman driving through Oklahoma. That's right, it's Taylor.
  • Taylor names her Turtle, and brings her along to Tucson, Arizona.
  • Time passes in Tucson. Turtle says her first word, "bean," while playing with Taylor in the garden one day (7.49).
  • One night in mid-summer, Turtle is attacked in Roosevelt Park. Although her physical injuries are minor, the trauma makes her draw into herself. Kind of like a turtle draws into its shell.
  • After a few weeks, Turtle begins talking again. Sticking her head out bit by bit.
  • Not long afterwards, Taylor brings her back to Oklahoma. There, Taylor arranges a "legal" adoption. Legal according to the state, that is, even though she secures it under false pretenses.
  • With her adoption papers in hand, Turtle sings in the passenger seat as Taylor drives them back home to Tucson.
