You can't help but love this girl and feel sad for her at the same time. She lost her mother and can't remember her. She adopts a dirty dog and brushes him with her own hairbrush. She's dying to know her father better. She's nice to everyone—except those pesky Dewberry boys. And she even comes around to them eventually. Add to that, she wants to care for and protect everyone, including the town witch.

How can you not side with Opal? Mix it all up and you've got an all-around great little girl that you want to succeed and find happiness.
