Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis)’s Timeline and Summary
- Adam and Barbara Maitland live in Winter River, Connecticut in their idyllic little house where nothing could ever go wrong.
- Then they die in a car accident.
- They return to the house as ghosts where they're forced to haunt the place for the next 125 years.
- This doesn't seem so bad until the Deetz family moves in and starts remodeling the house in an awful contemporary design style.
- Adam and Barbara consider calling "Betelgeuse the Bio-Exorcist," but opt to draw a door to the afterlife instead.
- There, they wait for three months to meet with their caseworker, Juno. She advises them not to call Betelgeuse. They should try to scare the Deetzes away themselves.
- In the meantime, they get to know Lydia Deetz and decide she's pretty cool. For a living teenager, that is.
- Meanwhile, the whole scare plan isn't going so well, so the Maitlands end up calling Betelgeuse for backup. This goes just as badly as you'd expect.
- Juno tells the Maitlands they need to get this whole situation under control, but they're torn about what to do. Maybe the Deetzes can just stay in the house after all?
- One evening, Barbara and Adam each disappear from the attic and reappear on the dining room table. Turns out they're about to be exorcised.
- Lydia manages to get them help by agreeing to marry Betelgeuse.
- Once Adam and Barbara are well again again—as well as you can be when you're dead—they spring into action to save Lydia from her bridal fate.
- Adam manages to ram Betelgeuse's foot with a car from the model town and Barbara rides a sandworm into the house to swallow him whole.
- Everyone can finally live together in peace and harmony. Calypso harmony.
