Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon Chapter 6 Summary

Norway Connection

  • Knut Haukelid is one hardcore Norwegian. When Hitler invades Norway in 1940, Knut and a few friends flip the Nazis the proverbial bird and ski into the wilderness with guns strapped to their backs and sabotage on their minds.
  • Knut joins one of the secret resistance groups forming all over Norway and begins working as a radio operator and spy, conveying German military movements to British intelligence officers via radio that he secretly hacks into in the middle of the night.
  • Knut helps to concoct a plan to assassinate Vidkun Quisling, the leader of the Norwegian Nazis. Unfortunately, just before their plan can be carried out, German intelligence discovers Haukelid's crew of radio operators, captures a number of them, and throws them into concentration camps. Knut is able to escape into the mountains once more, though, then bicycle to Sweden, and from there, make his way to Great Britain.
  • Hitler's Gestapo forces storm Knut's family's house for information. S.W. Fehmer, chief of Gestapo intelligence in Norway angrily interrogated Knut's proud mother about what he must be up to in Great Britain, and like a true G, she replies "You will find out when he comes back." Knut's mother is awesome.
