- Foreign Service Officer David Webb's family is killed in Cambodia in the mid-1960s.
- Webb becomes Delta, a paramilitary fighter. On a mission, he executes traitor Jason Bourne on March 25, 1968.
- After the Vietnam War, Webb becomes an academic. He is recruited for Treadstone and becomes the (fake) assassin Bourne (alias Cain) in order to trap Carlos. This occurs sometime around 1975.
- Webb is undercover for three years as Bourne/Cain.
- The novel begins in the late 1970s, when Webb is shot and loses his memory.
- Over the next months, Bourne works to regain his memory and trap Carlos, who is trying to kill him.
- While running from Carlos, Bourne kidnaps Marie St. Jacques. The two fall in love after Bourne saves her from Carlos's men.
