Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Isabel
Guess what? Isabel is the main character in this book. She's the one telling her own story, and she's definitely the one we're rooting for to show the Locktons and colonial American society what's up. We experience her frustration, shame, and sadness right along with her, but also shout out a big, loud you go girl when she says, "If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl?" (42.10). By showing Isabel's trials and obstacles, Anderson does a great job of aligning our loyalties with this brave, compassionate young lady.
