A Clockwork Orange was initially published in 1962. In the United States, the book was published with only twenty chapters. Elsewhere in the world, the book had twenty chapters. Apparently, this was the doing of Anthony Burgess's American editor, and Burgess has yet to get over his bad judgment. He chews out his publisher in an introduction he writes for the book's second release in 1986. The publisher could do nothing but retreat and apologize.
A Clockwork Orange is Anthony Burgess' least favorite of the many books he has penned. In fact, he would disown it if he could, much like Beethoven is rumored to have wished to disown Minuet in G, if he could.
The term "hypnopaedia" was also used in another dystopian novel, Brave New World, published by Aldous Huxley thirty years prior to Burgess's publication of A Clockwork Orange.The clothes at the "heighth of fashion" for some of the modern youth are still considered to be at the height of fashion today.
