Harry Bagley Timeline and Summary
MoreHarry Bagley Timeline and Summary
- Harry shows up at Clive's place fresh from some jungle exploration adventures. They're both very happy to see each other. Harry sees Edward and says he barely recognizes him. Edward seems offended, but we don't think much of this at first.
- When he's left alone with Betty, Harry pledges his love and says that Betty is all he thinks about when he's out in the jungle at night. Betty wants them to be together, but Harry says that Clive is too good a friend to him.
- Later on, Harry is alone with Edward, and Edward pledges his love to Harry. We learn that Edward and Harry have had a pedophilic encounter in the past and that Edward wants to have another one. But like he does with Betty, Harry tells Edward they can't do anything with so many people around.
- At the end of Act 1, Scene 1, Harry invites Joshua to go out into the barn and have sex. Joshua agrees and the two of them walk off together. This is probably all starting to sound painfully normal by this point.
- Eventually, Harry kisses Betty. Then Clive confronts Harry about what's happened and Harry begs for forgiveness.
- Clive talks about how the bonds between men are stronger than those between men and women, and Harry uses it as an opportunity to make a move on Clive. Clive is disgusted and says that Harry needs to marry a woman right away to cure his sexual deviance.
- At random, Harry asks the first woman he sees to marry him. The first woman is Mrs. Saunders, who says no. The second is the governess Ellen, who says yes.
- Act 1 ends with Harry and Ellen getting married. It's the last we see of either of them, though we can imagine that they won't be happy living in the box that society has forced them into.
