- At Stromford (in late May), Crispin's mother dies.
- Crispin overhears a strange conversation between John Aycliffe and Sir Richard du Brey.
- John Aycliffe accuses Crispin of theft, and Crispin is hunted by the villagers.
- Father Quinel tells Crispin his true name.
- Crispin escapes the village, passing the murdered body of Father Quinel.
- Three days after his escape from Stromford, Crispin passes the corpse of a hanged man.
- Four days after his escape from Stromford (May 29), Crispin arrives at the ruins of a plague-stricken village and meets Bear; they travel together.
- Six days after his escape from Stromford (May 31), Crispin and Bear continue on their way, but they take a detour because Aycliffe's men have set up a roadblock to find Crispin.
- Seven days after his escape from Stromford (June 1), Crispin and Bear perform in the village of Lodgecot.
- For the next twenty days (June 2-21), Crispin and Bear travel toward Great Wexly, with Bear teaching Crispin many things along the way.

When Crispin notices a spy watching him, though, he goes to warn Bear, which leads to Bear being taken prisoner by John Aycliffe's men. After soldiers destroy her tavern, Widow Daventry tells Crispin the truth of his parentage.
- That night (June 23-24), Crispin makes his way to Lord Furnival's palace, confronts John Aycliffe, and barters for Bear's freedom.
- At dawn (June 24), Bear and Crispin fight with Aycliffe, who is killed in the struggle, and leave Great Wexly as free men.
