The Section Chief

The Section Chief is Poprishchin's least favorite person. He tells Poprishchin he does sloppy work and helpfully informs him that he's too old, ugly, and poor to marry Sophie, the Director's daughter. Most of the time he pretends Poprishchin doesn't exist. Poprishchin blames him for a lot of what's happened to him.
