Foil

Character Role Analysis

Adam/Charles, Aron/Cal

Foils are characters that somehow undermine one another through a contrast in their personalities or actions. So we've devised a simple formula to help you figure out this story's foils: Cain and Abel are the ultimate foils, therefore Cain characters and Abel characters are foils. It's not very subtle either. They are foils because:

(1) they are complete opposites personality-wise.

(2) they have a weird love-hate competition thing going.

(3) it seems like they can't both exist without one destroying the other.

At the same time, they are both brothers of about the same age (or exactly the same age, in the second case), which means that they are similar enough so that their differences really stand out as differences (which is another aspect foils generally have).

Foil away, boys.
