Nikki Beckett (Becks) Timeline and Summary

  • Nikki's mom dies in a car crash, and she has trouble dealing with it. She also starts dating Jack, her childhood friend who she's been crushing on forever but feels she doesn't deserve.
  • During a tough time—the guy who killed Nikki's mom is found innocent in court, and Jack appears to be cheating on her—Nikki asks Cole, a guitarist, to take away her pain. He takes her to the Everneath and Feeds on her memories and emotions.
  • Nikki returns to the Surface for six months to try to set her life straight. For some reason she's managed to hang onto her memories and her sanity, causing Cole to pester her and ask her to come be immortal with him.
  • Things are awkward between Nikki and Jack, but they start hanging out again. She lies to him to keep him from growing attached, though.
  • To distract herself from her emotional pain, Nikki starts stalking Cole, and figures out that he and his band-members are convincing others to give up their lives as Forfeits for the queen of the Everneath to Feed on.
  • Nikki also befriends a crazy old lady, Mary, who seems to have some insight into Nikki's life.
  • Eventually Nikki tells Jack that she remembers everything and has feelings for him. But she continues to lie about how she has limited time before the Tunnels claim her soul forever.
  • Together, Jack and Nikki try to reveal Cole's secrets. When they realize that Mary is Meredith, a high school friend who also went under for the Feed, they gain more clues.
  • Nikki and Jack use a bracelet Mary gave them to learn that the Everlivings are vulnerable if you can find and destroy their hearts.
  • Cole continues to make trouble for Nikki, in an effort to convince her to choose everlasting life with him over being eternal suffering in the Tunnels. Nikki's attempt to smash Cole's heart (which she assumes is in his guitar) is unsuccessful.
  • Nikki's there when the Tunnels claim Mary, and then the Tunnels come for her. Jack takes Nikki's place in the Tunnels, though, having put together enough puzzle pieces to figure out that he can do that.
  • Nikki dreams of Jack every night, keeping him alive in some sense even though he's gone. She resolves to find him again.
