Family Drama
A mother and two daughters together for an afternoon: let the family drama begin.
This story is rife with family conflict way before the big blowout quilt scene at the end. From listening to the narrator chat freely with us in the beginning, we get a pretty good idea of how difficult her relationship with her daughter Dee has been. And the fact that we're told that Maggie looks at her sister with "a mixture of envy and awe" just screams family drama, doesn't it? When Dee finally shows up, there's definitely some weird, albeit subtle, tension as she begins her photo shoot and announces her big name change to her mother and sister.
Even though a mother and daughter fighting over a quilt isn't the kind of life and death drama of Grey's Anatomy, it's bona fide drama nonetheless. That's partly because there's a whole lot more at stake in the conflict between Dee and her mother than just some pieces of cloth. The outcome of this conflict has the potential to fundamentally change the dynamics in this family so that Dee is no longer the queen and Maggie is no longer the loser.
