• Cath Avery arrives at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to begin her freshman year.
• She meets her new roommate, Reagan, and Reagan's ex-boyfriend, Levi, who's always hanging around.
• Cath is afraid of other human beings, especially ones her own age, so she hides in the dorm eating snacks she brought with her rather than going to the dining hall for meals.
• Things start looking up when she goes to her Fiction-Writing class and meets her cool teacher, Professor Piper, and her cool classmate, Nick.
• Cath and Nick start writing together in the library—where Nick works—a couple of times a week.
• After turning in a piece Professor Piper loves, Cath decides to turn in a piece of Simon Snow fanfiction for her next assignment.
• Professor Piper tells her fanfiction is plagiarism, and Cath struggles to make up her own story.
• In the meantime, Cath and Levi have started to like each other. Like, like like. And Cath keeps liking him, despite the fact that she catches him kissing another girl at a party.
• Cath goes home to visit her dad and learns that her mom wants to have a relationship with her and Wren. Cath says no way.
• When her dad has a manic episode and Wren ends up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, Cath counts on Levi for rides.
• Cath falls in love with Levi, and Levi with Cath, as if you couldn't see that coming.
• Professor Piper gives Cath an incomplete, which means another semester to finish her final story.
• Cath, on the other hand, is racing against the Gemma T. Leslie clock to finish Carry On, Simon.
• Happy ending: She finishes Carry On, she finishes her story for Fiction-Writing, the story wins a prize in the Prairie Schooner contest, and although she doesn't have a relationship with her mom, she pretty much has the best boyfriend ever.
