Sisak Kenderian

Sisak isn't around for much of the novel, but when he is, he helps his little bro out by encouraging him and giving him advice. He helps Vahan escape from Goryan's Inn, and reminds him of their dad's plea to "be steel." Pretty quickly Sisak dies, just like the rest of Vahan's family, and our main guy is left without a mentor. While this helps him grow up at a rapid pace, it also makes him mourn for the family he's lost.

Vahan wishes he didn't have to make decisions about where to go or what to do, because he's not sure about any of it. Did you notice that when Vahan gets frustrated, he thinks back to his family? That's because, in some ways, they are still guiding him, even when they're gone—it might just be in his head, but it helps him push forward nonetheless.
