Frey (Freyr)
Frey (Freyr)
Frey is a very powerful god in Asgard, even if he is originally a Vanir (enemies of the ruling Aesirs). He was traded along with his father and sister as a hostage in the Aesir-Vanir war. In the end, the Aesir gods were so impressed with him that they gave him Alfheim, the realm of the elves, as a little reward. He’s got the inhabitants of Middle-Earth in the palm of his hand, too: they pray to him for good crop yields, fair weather, and fertility. On top of that, Frey has the sweetest rides you’ve ever seen, both of them dwarvish-crafted. One, Skiðblaðnir, is a ship that always goes the right way, and bonus, folds up to fit inside your pocket. The other is a shiny boar, Gullinbursti, that’s big enough to ride. Frey is best known for pursuing the giantess Gerðr and pretty much forcing her to marry him. Not the most stand-up guy in the cosmos, that's for sure.
